Professor Kenneth Agyeman Attafuah the Executive Secretary of the National Identification
Authority (NIA) led a nine- member delegation to pay a courtesy call on Hajia Alima Mahama,
the Ambassador of Ghana to the United States on Wednesday July 17, 2024.
The Meeting was to brief the Ambassador and her staff of the Embassy on the planned
registration of Ghanaians in the United States for the Ghana Card. They laid out the modalities
for the entire process of reaching out to the Ghanaian Communities, vetting, capturing of
biometrics, registration, printing and issuing of the Ghana Cards to Ghanaians across the length
and breadth of the United States. The issuance of Ghana Cards to the diaspora involves setting
up registration centers in various countries where there are significant number of Ghanaian
communities.
This effort aims at ensuring that Ghanaians abroad can also access the benefits of having a national ID card, such as simplified processes for accessing services and opportunities both within Ghana and internationally.
In order to ensure the smooth implementation of the exercise, the NIA seeks to partner with Embassy, honorary consulates, and other relevant organizations to streamline this process and ensure that Ghanaians in the United States can easily register and receive their Ghana Cards.
The National Identification Authority (NIA) of Ghana is responsible for issuing the Ghana Card, a national identity card, to all Ghanaians, including those living in the diaspora. So far the NIA has issued about 19 million Ghana Cards in Ghana.
